Point of Purchase vs Internet Shopping

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

There are many advantages of Internet purchasing. A consumer is sometimes offered a tempting discount and often free delivery. There is always the anticipation of waiting for it to arrive, and then the excitement when it does.  However, there is the hassle if the product never arrives in the two to three working days time, if it arrives at all. This is when the annoyance starts. Constant emails and lack of replies can become a problem, especially to those who work every weekday, leaving Saturdays to phone around, chasing the order (as the company is more than likely to be closed Sunday). Thus the result being you’ve actually spent more in total on phone bills and electric bills from using the Internet for checking and sending emails, as well as the added stress from not having the enjoyment of your order instantly. But of course for some people these situations may never occur through years of Internet shopping, but the question is it worth the risk when there is a solution.

That solution is Point of Purchase buying. The gratification is instant and if there is a problem, however big or small, a quick trip back to the shop, the problem is normally resolved there and then, and if not, money back is normally guaranteed.

This is the importance of Point of Purchase displays and can be the difference between sale in store and a sale online. If products are displayed in certain ways, on shelves and racks, and in cabinets and cases, the consumer is automatically drawn to the product, just as they are with highly designed websites. The main aim is to attract consumer attention and gain interest in a product. There are certain methods of presenting in the best way possible using certain companies that specify in displaying merchandise to a high standard, which will therefore result in a high interest for that product and then of course that business.

Every consumer knows the temptation of a purchase when it is available there and then, especially when there is a sale, or the seller is willing to be negotiated down to the price that is featured online. And of course as soon as the exchange of money for product is complete, the euphoric feeling obtained from a purchase, however great or small, cannot be matched from simply clicking ‘Purchase Now’.
